OnePlus launches Buds 4 with standout noise cancellation
OnePlus has introduced the fourth generation of its Buds lineup, positioning the new Buds 4 in the midrange segment with a clear focus on active noise cancellation. In Finland the earbuds carry a list price of 119 euros, making them a cheaper alternative within OnePlus’s own family to the Buds Pro. Last year’s Buds 3 Pro are commonly available for around 149 euros today, so buyers can save a few dozen euros by choosing the Buds 4. Color options include Storm Gray and Zen Green.
Hardware and audio architecture
The Buds 4 use a two-driver design: an 11 mm woofer for deep bass and a 6 mm tweeter for high frequencies. Each driver is processed by its own dedicated DAC.
Bluetooth streaming supports LHDC 5.0, enabling up to 24-bit/192 kHz resolution. OnePlus also includes 3D Audio for spatial effects and a Golden Sound feature that adapts the output to the user’s ear canal.
Sound: bass-forward but competent
In real-world listening the Buds 4 deliver solid midrange performance for the price, with a noticeably bass-forward signature. Low frequencies tend to dominate and can mask higher-frequency details, which may disappoint listeners who prefer classical or acoustic material. Fans of electronic music are less likely to find that profile problematic.
Despite the emphasis on bass, treble remains controlled and non-fatiguing, so long listening sessions are comfortable. The Buds 4 do not match the audio refinement of pricier rivals, but they hold their own within this price tier.
Noise cancellation and transparency
Where OnePlus shines with the Buds 4 is ANC. Each earbud uses three microphones for active noise cancellation, and the company claims an adaptive noise reduction level up to 55 dB. That exact number is hard to verify independently, but in practice the ANC performs extremely well and competes closely with more expensive noise-cancelling true wireless models.
The Buds 4 create a noticeably quieter environment on public transit, at busy bus stops near roads, or any place where you want a moment of isolation. Wind reduction also works effectively.
The transparency (ambient) mode is equally competent. The earbuds are lightweight and unobtrusive in the ear, and the transparency setting makes them easy to forget you’re wearing at times.
Automatic switching between ANC and transparency
OnePlus has added an automatic mode that switches between noise cancellation and transparency. The exact triggers behind that automation remain unclear. For example, the system did not open up to train announcements while on a train, but it did allow sound from a lawn mower through by switching to transparency. For now users may prefer to toggle modes manually for predictable results.
Setup and app support
Pairing is straightforward: opening the charging case puts the Buds 4 into pairing mode, and you can connect via Bluetooth immediately. The HeyMelody app, available for Android and iOS, provides basic controls for the earbuds and ANC, though it lacks the depth of customization offered by some competing apps. OnePlus phones do not require a separate app for integration.
The Buds 4 also support Google Fast Pair, dual-device connectivity, and a low-latency gaming mode with approximately 47 ms latency. On OnePlus phones the gaming mode activates automatically.
Battery life and charging
OnePlus quotes up to 11 hours of playback from the earbuds after a 10-minute charge, and up to 45 hours total with the charging case when ANC is off. In practical testing with ANC enabled, the earbuds lasted roughly six and a half hours on a single full charge before needing the case.
The case charges over USB-C and does not support wireless charging. The earbuds and case are rated IP55 for dust and water resistance.
Design, fit, and controls
The Buds 4 are lightweight and comfortable. Key dimensions for a single earbud are 31 x 20.6 x 24.2 mm. The silicone tips included in the box come in three sizes and have a slightly oval shape. Individual earbuds weigh 4.7 grams and include short stems with swipe gestures for control.
The plastic charging case measures 65.4 x 52.4 x 25.3 mm and weighs 39.57 grams. It is compact, moderately rigid, and closes magnetically—secure enough for a pocket, though the case can release its contents if dropped.
Verdict and value
Overall, the OnePlus Buds 4 are a successful midrange true wireless offering. At the 119 euro list price they compete effectively with options such as Huawei’s FreeArcs, Sennheiser Sport models, and Apple’s AirPods 4. Some retailers are already discounting the Buds 4 to 99 euros, which improves the value proposition further.
If your priority is strong active noise cancellation and a bass-forward sound profile is acceptable, the Buds 4 are an excellent choice.
